2002 : IRISH SPAWN / SPAWN.COM BOARD MEMBERS EXCLUSIVE
As promised a little bit of background on the project I have been working on for quite a while now. First I am gonna show you where I started from. It was the day after my Bday (08/22) and I put my Bloodaxe and Skullsplitter in two comic bags with a cardboard on top, just to see how would the y look like. The figures are massive so they filled the comic bag properly without leaving much space in the bag itself. I thought they looked great and so moved onto the next step
My PhotoShop skills are basically inexistent and this is what I came up with after a long time scanning, cropping, cutting, pasting ... The rough look wasn't that bad but I had to refine the overall look to make it a bit more professional.
I also printed it out in black and white just to give me an overall idea and a feeling of the label on top of the figure. Yes very rough, but I thought I was on the right track.
DRIIIIIIN, DRIIIIIIIN ... that is KENDRAGON phone ringing ! I was looking for someone with great talent in photo composition and rendering and who better than my Irish neighbour ! After a few mails and a phone call, Ken came back to me with this first draught of the label and I was already amazed by the speed and spot on rendering. Exactly what I was looking for !
I came back to Ken with some feedback and some ideas. I wanted for example to keep the Viking logos on the label as much as possible and there was some more work to be refined in the back of the label. So after maybe 10 minutes, Ken came back to me with this. And at that stage I could not believe my eyes !
At that stage I was pretty much happy with the result and the overall idea. It was now time to submit it for approval and feedback to TMP in the person of Dion Bozman. Good ol' Dion took a good look, approved the idea and outlined the possibility to have the labels signed by the big boss himself and gave me some comments and mods he wanted to see implemented on the labels in order to be just right. These I attached to a couple of mails I sent him to be clear on my intentions on packaging and overall looks.
After conferring with Dion, I submitted the comments to Ken, who completed the masterpiece producing the final label.
After the fun work, was about logistics. Printing the labels and sending them to Dion in order for Todd to sign them, was the easiest part. The delivery and packaging was going to be a nightmare, but here is when Kim from spawntoys.com jumped into the project offering his help. He not only offered to provide the 20 figures for me, but has been also in charge of packaging the figures and address them to the related board members. I don't have a picture of Kim putting the figures in their bags, but I have a picture of Todd signing the 20 labels !
Well this is the story so far. The figures should have been sent today and hopefully should be under your Xmas trees soon !
To give the proper credit to the proper people ... I think you can see what kendragon has done, by yourself. Not only he is very talented, he also has put his on time on the project and I thank him very much for that. Dion was the link I needed to get approval and signatures. He was spot on from day one and very supportive. Ultimately he kept his promise and had the labels delivered to Kim as soon as they were ready. And for that I thank him very very much. Kim was the icing on the cake. He took off me a lot of trouble and expenses. The way it worked was faster and cheaper than having to do the work all by myself. He always has been good with board members and I thank him very much. Also thanks to Todd to have found the time to look into this little project and for signing the labels for me. Ultimately I would like to give myself a little credit too. This is a non-profit initiative, meaning that I paid the overall bill and I ain't gonna make a penny out of it (before some smart ass comes out and makes some comment :D). This project is a little contribution to the cause. A little gesture of appreciation to people who are great friends, who helped me and supported me for my collection and my website and NEVER asked anything in return. Well I hope this can partially square the deal with all of you guys. A big thank you for being such wonderful people.
What ? Who is gonna receive it ? Well ... at this point in time I assume mostly everyone involved knows. I am not gonna publish a list or anything like that, it's not the point. I am just asking to the owners of these figures to send me a picture of it (preferably underneath the Xmas tree, just to keep in the jolly spirit). Deal ?
Have a great day you all ! Max THE IRISH SPAWN.
